Trump Profits by Selling Wall Street a Head Start on His Own Posts

Trump Media & Technology Group launched a new subscription product called the “Truth API” on Aug. 1, giving institutional trading firms rapid, machine-readable access to posts from Truth Social’s most market-moving accounts, including President Trump’s, for a reported $100,000 a month [1, 2]. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff sent a letter to SEC Chair Paul Atkins calling the product “an outrageous abuse of the President’s office for his personal benefit that undermines everyday investors and the integrity of our markets” and asked the agency to investigate [3]. House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin separately opened his own investigation into the arrangement [4].

As of Sunday, the SEC had acknowledged receiving the senators’ letter but had not announced a formal investigation. Trump Media spokeswoman Shannon Devine defended the service, saying it offers “the fastest way to ingest publicly available Truth Social data” and disputed that it amounts to insider trading [2].

Why It Sucks:

Trump Media and Administration Allies

  • It’s public data, not insider information. The company’s defense is that every Truth API subscriber sees the same posts everyone else can see publicly — they’re just paying for faster technical delivery, not privileged content [2].
  • Selling data feeds is a normal business, not a scandal. Financial data vendors have charged for low-latency access to public information for decades; allies argue this is being singled out only because Trump’s name is attached [1].
  • The investigations are politically motivated. With Warren, Schiff, and Raskin all Democrats leading the charge, the administration’s allies frame the probes as partisan harassment rather than good-faith securities oversight [3, 4].

Congressional Democrats and Ethics Watchdogs

  • A sitting president is monetizing his own office. Warren and Schiff argue that Trump, who controls a trust owning a large stake in Trump Media, directly profits every time a hedge fund pays for a speed advantage on his own market-moving statements [3].
  • This is a novel conflict of interest with no real precedent. Raskin’s investigation centers on whether a president effectively selling advance notice of his own official communications constitutes a unique abuse of the office itself [4].
  • The SEC’s silence so far is itself concerning. Watchdogs note that as of Sunday the agency had only acknowledged the letter without committing to act, which they see as a troubling lack of urgency given the stakes [2, 3].

Everyday Retail Investors

  • A two-tiered market just got more unequal. Ordinary investors reading the same Truth Social post on their phones are, by design, seconds or minutes behind hedge funds paying $100,000 a month for machine-readable feeds [1, 2].
  • Speed advantages compound existing unfairness. This echoes long-standing complaints about high-frequency trading, except here the price-moving information originates from the president himself rather than neutral market data [1].
  • Retail traders have no comparable option. Unlike institutional firms, individual investors can’t reasonably pay enterprise pricing for a data feed, leaving them structurally behind on posts that can move markets in real time [2].
